Situated in the hipster neighbourhood of Jalan Dhoby in Johor Bahru, The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen is a chill cafe and boutique lodge / hostel. Opening its doors in May 2015, The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen quickly gained popularity for its picture-worthy premises, modern fusion European brunch dishes, and relaxing atmosphere.
Ambience at The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen channels a clean, minimalist, zen sort of feel. Homely and welcoming, brightly lit by ample natural lighting during the day and warm decorative lamps at night. The combination of white washed walls against grey concrete floors, neatly lined with oak wooden coloured furniture, is modern yet classic hipster. Beautiful place, where nearly every corner is picture-worthy!
Service at The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen is friendly and courteous. The mostly young staff are chirpy and interact well with guests, taking orders tableside, though payment is self-service over the counter. Orders are fulfilled quickly even during peak periods, usually within 15 minutes. Staff are efficient are clearing away empty / dirty tables, since the diner turnover here is high. They're able to share brief descriptions of dishes, decent product knowledge.
Food at The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen is modern fusion European, focusing on brunch and desserts. Dishes are creatively put together and named, and generally, taste is pretty alright. Not the most outstanding, but sufficient enough for a cafe. Portions are slightly large for individuals, and quite filling if you finish it on your own. Communal dining is recommended. Prices are comparable to other cafes, budget about MYR RM35 / SGD $11.30 per person for a meal here.

The signature beverages here are the Slow Juice (MYR RM15 / SGD $4.90 Each), made fresh on order, quite healthy with no added sugar. The Yellow Pages is a blend of juicy Asian pear, sweet red apples, and a zesty lemon. The Green Hornet is a blend of sweet granny smith apples with vegetal celery stalks. The Pink Lady is a blend of juicy tangy tomatoes with sweet red apples. Refreshing!

The Beer Harviestoun Old Engine Oil (MYR RM15 / SGD $4.90) is an English Porter dark beer, brewed by Harviestoun Brewery in Clackmannanshire county, Scotland, United Kingdom. It has a deep, dark brown colour, with aromas of dark cherry, roasted malt, ground coffee, and ripe plum. Has a creamy, frothy foam head, and a rich, velvety smooth, medium body texture that beautifully coats the palate. Tastes of bitter chocolate, fresh coffee, sweet caramel, and burnt toast bread, with a long, twisting finish of liquorice and prunes. Fantastic brew, pairs well with meats, heavy sauces, or spicy food.

Loved the Churros With Hazelnut Nutella (MYR RM14.90 / SGD $4.80). The house made churros closely resemble the traditional Spanish doughnuts here, long, slightly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, warm in texture. Dusted in a light coat of cinnamon sugar, these delicious treats are good enough to eat on their own. Paired with a simple hazelnut nutella sauce, the thick, rich sauce lends even greater flavour to this dessert. Highly recommended!

Loved the pretty presentation of the Soft Shell Crab Bao With Fries (MYR RM29.90 / SGD $10). The fluffy and soft pan-seared homemade bao / bun sandwiches a crisp, savoury salty, deep-fried, meaty soft shell crab, dressed with a sweet chili aioli. Completed with a fresh salad dressed with lemon juice. Served with a mild wasabi mayonnaise, and some excellent thick cut English chips with solid potato flavour. Good!
