2018 Story

Thank God for all that has happened in 2018! Grateful for the continued love, grace, favour, and mercies from the Holy Spirit.

For me, there were 3 distinct phases to 2018. January to February was a blur of activity. Kickstarting the business transformation meant 'no day, no night', and I spent every waking hour planning, coordinating, preparing, scheduling, and facilitating workshops... all in all, 124 workshops (for context, this works out to be an average of 2 workshops per day). Worked closely with all training schools and departments, but it was really fulfilling, with long-term business impact and consequences.

Thankful as this is the 1st time I'm working so closely with the head office business. Till today, people still remember the work we did, and point to some of it as the genesis for further change. Also got back into video games after many years away, and started playing Overwatch for leisure.

March to August was business as usual, with a fair amount of traveling - England (London), Australia (Tasmania - Bicheno, Bruny Island, Cradle Mountain, Hobart, Launceston, Port Arthur), and Taiwan (Nantou, Taichung, Taipei). Work was conducting classes, research into new learning technologies, meetings with vendors, learning visits to other companies, and courseware development. Plus, I learnt agile methodology and design thinking principles, and applied it to projects.

Personally, I hit a major life milestone, with the purchase of a condominum unit at Riverfront Residences. Through this, I saw how God was faithful and provided for me. Also managed to connect back with old friends during this period, and did more online purchasing, becoming a loyal customer of Threadless, Uniqlo, and Undandy. Also attended quite a few memorable restaurant openings, promotions, and events.

September to December kicked back into high gear, with the search for a new learning platform intensifying, and daily meetings or conference calls with vendors. Along with the annual planning and budgeting period, and the development of interactive videos, we also got our first intern, who helped developed the online learning catalogue. Haven't had an intern for years, so it was a new experience for me. Did a corporate photoshoot, the last time I did this was 7 years ago. Finally, started searching for new content libraries, and began planning and organising the learning festival for next year, which is now taking up the majority of time. Most of these would carry forward into next year.

Returned to experience Halloween Horror Nights 8, in its 8th edition this year. Finally completed all my national service obligations, and handed over to the rest of the brothers. Ended by learning how to dragonboat, which was capped by us winning a memorable race. We managed a near full gathering of friends at Christmas, and I also extracted my 1st set of wisdom teeth at Nuffield Dental, which thankfully healed quickly. Inexplicably crossed the 10k+ followers milestone on, of all social media platforms, Burpple, and ended 2018 with 11,277 followers there.
