Orient Hotel Public Bar
@ 89 George Street, The Rocks, Sydney, New South Wales 2000, Australia
Opening Hours: Daily 11am – 11pm
https://www.orienthotel.com.au/
Established by James Chapman in 1844, Orient Hotel Public Bar is among the city’s oldest continuously operating pubs. A popular evening spot for its welcoming beer garden, friendly service, and decently straightforward food, Orient Hotel Public Bar has gained a well-deserved reputation for classic pub fare and relaxed dining.
Ambience at Orient Hotel Public Bar has a heritage charm, situated within a restored mid‑19th century. The draw is the beautiful and relaxing outdoor terrace which allows you to watch the world go by, almost nobody frequents the gaudy neon-lit indoor area which has a dusty and musky smell. Regulars gather in the al-fresco terrace in the evenings. Service at Orient Hotel Public Bar is passable. Ordering of food is performed self-service via QR codes on the table that direct you to an online site, yet beer on tap is self-service ordered over the counter, a confusing arrangement. That said, staff are friendly, introducing orders when they serve, although they take a while to clean up when diners leave. Food at Orient Hotel Public Bar is Modern Australian cuisine and classic British English cuisine. Dishes are simple, straightforward, and reliably tasty. Portions are medium to large for individuals. Prices are reasonable, budget about AUD $47 / SGD $43 per person.

The Grilled Kangaroo Loin (AUD $32) features bushmeat kangaroo, fillet of loin or rump, heavily seasoned then grilled. I can see why too, the texture is lean firm bouncy chewy, without much fat or juice, and carries smoky meaty salty savoury earthy flavour, yet there is an unappealing slightly bitter minerally flavour note on the finish. Served with thick steakhouse-cut potato chips, fluffy crisp in texture with starchy salty savoury flavour. On the side is a rich thick black pepper sauce which I was grateful for, lending a sharp peppery salty savoury spice kick to flavour. For the price, you're better off going with steak, I just had this for the experience. Meh.
