Mirrors George Town Street Art is a project commissioned for the annual George Town festival in Penang. Artists are commissioned to create various artworks in public locations along the streets of George Town, these artworks are collectively known as the Mirrors George Town Street Art.

Over the last several years, many scupltures, paintings and dioramas have been created as part of the Mirrors George Town Street Art, located in streets all over George Town. 2 of the most well known works in the Mirrors George Town Street Art collection are the Steel Rod Sculptures, and the Murals By Ernest Zacharevic.

The Steel Rod Sculptures By Sculpture At Work depict everyday life and culture in Penang, or simply provide a commentary on the surrounding location of its placement. The company Sculpture At Work won the design competition for Mirrors George Town Street Art in 2009. Comprising 23 sculptures, the 7 most popular ones include Bullock Cart Wheel Sculpture at Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Cheating Husband Sculpture at Lorong Love / Love Lane, Escape Sculpture at Lebuh Acheh, Kopi-O Sculpture at Lebuh Kimberley, Narrowest Five Foot Way Sculpture at Lorong Stewart, Jimmy Choo Sculpture at Lebuh Leith, and Waterway Sculpture at Gat Jalan Perangin.

The Murals By Ernest Zacharevic were created by this Lithuania-born artist for the Mirrors George Town Street Art festival in 2012. Comprising 8 wall paintings, these murals have attracted international attention. While the murals haven't been officially named, they have gained unofficial names by the international community. The 5 most popular ones include Little Children On A Bicycle Mural at Lebuh Armenian, Reaching Up at Lebuh Chulia / Cannon Street, Awaiting Trishaw Paddler Mural at Jalan Penang, and Boy On A Bike Mural & Little Boy With Pet Dinosaur Mural at Lebuh Ah Quee.

In particular, Boy On A Bike Mural & Little Boy With Pet Dinosaur Mural at Lebuh Ah Quee has the most interesting back story. The original completed mural was Boy On A Bike Mural, which featured a painting of a boy on a wall, against a foreground of a real motorcycle. A vandal came and painted a dinosaur / monster, as if chasing the boy on the bike. When artist Ernest Zacharevic heard, he came back and added another boy with a collar around the dinosaur / monster neck, turning it into the mural Little Boy With Pet Dinosaur Mural.

If you're planning a visit, allocate between 1 to 4 hours for viewing, and wear a good pair of walking shoes. Plan your route in advance if you wish to see all the art work. This map may be helpful: http://www.penang-traveltips.com/george-town-street-art.htm

Update Aug-2015: Over the last 3 years, there has been an increasing amount of artists adding to Mirrors George Town Street Art, inspired by the earlier works. However, with this increase in artwork, there has also been an increase in commercialisation, where vendors now tout various souvenirs adapted from the original images. Even worse, some of the original artwork around the area has either fallen into disrepair, or has been totally destroyed, and is no longer in existence. I still feel that Mirrors George Town Street Art is worth a visit though, and because the artwork by various artists is now spread over a wider area, hopefully, they will be preserved longer...
