Description:
A Chili Dog is a type of snack food that comprises of a sausage sandwiched within a sliced bun, and topped with various condiments, of which the primary condiment is a meat chili sauce. Origins of the Chili Dog point to Greek immigrants in America. Today, the Chili Dog is popular in America, Mexico, Greece, and many other parts of the world.

Many different sausages can be used for the Chili Dog. They range from plain sausages, to meaty bratwursts, to cheese sausages, to spicy sausages. Regardless of the type of sausage, the most common meats used to make them are either chicken, pork, or beef. The sausages are either grilled, pan fried, or boiled. The length of the sausages is at least 6 inches or more.

The bun used for Chili Dog is almost always a roll / loaf, that is either lightly toasted or just served plain. The bun is normally either an American style hot dog bun, a French baguette, an Italian ciabatta, or a New England style roll. The bun is halved / sliced through the middle, and the sausage placed within, and condiments are loaded on top. The length of the bun is at least 6 inches or more.

A Chili Dog will always be topped with a meat chili sauce, and at least 1 or more of the following condiments; namely mild American mustard, chopped red onions, lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and / or American cheese. No other condiment beyond these listed can be added to the Chili Dog.

The meat chili sauce for the Chili Dog is most often a Chili Con Carne without beans, which is a spicy stew of Mexican origin that includes chili peppers, bell peppers, minced beef, diced tomatoes, garlic, diced red onions, salt, cumin, cayenne pepper and chili powder. This meat chili sauce should have a thick gravy consistency, and should have a savoury meaty taste, with a mild spicy kick.

A Chili Dog is served accompanied by either French fries / English chips, mashed potato or potato chips. A cold drink is also served, normally a soft drink, iced tea or beer.

A Chili Dog is a filling, satisfying comfort food, that can be eaten on the move, although it is rather messy.
