Description:
Sausages and Sauerkraut are typical German foods, but the idea of putting both ingredients into a bun and calling it the Sauerkraut Dog seems to have originated from German immigrants in America. Today, the Sauerkraut Dog is popular in America, Germany, Chile, and many other parts of the world.

Many different sausages can be used for the Sauerkraut Dog, although German bratwursts are preferred. They range from plain sausages, to meaty bratwursts, to cheese sausages, to herbed sausages. Regardless of the type of sausage, the most common meats used to make them are either chicken, pork, or beef. The sausages are either grilled, pan fried, or boiled. The length of the sausages is at least 6 inches or more.

The bun used for Sauerkraut Dog is almost always a roll / loaf, that is either lightly toasted or just served plain. The bun is normally either an American style hot dog bun, a French baguette, an Italian ciabatta, or a New England style roll. The bun is halved / sliced through the middle, and the sausage placed within, and condiments are loaded on top. The length of the bun is at least 6 inches or more.

A Sauerkraut Dog will always be topped with Sauerkraut, and at least 1 or more of the following condiments; namely mild American mustard, lettuce, sliced tomatoes, mayonnaise / remoulade / aioli, American sweet pickled relish / gherkins, caramelized sweet onions, chopped avocados, and / or American cheese. No other condiment beyond these listed can be added to the Sauerkraut Dog.

The Sauerkraut for the Sauerkraut Dog is made with finely shredded cabbage, oil, vinegar, water, salt, juniper berries and caraway seeds. The Sauerkraut should have a slightly tangy sour taste.

A Sauerkraut Dog is served accompanied by either French fries / English chips, mashed potato or potato chips. Sometimes, a side of even more sauerkraut or pickles are served instead. A cold drink is also served, normally a soft drink, iced tea or beer.

A Sauerkraut Dog is quite uncommon in Singapore, as very few stalls sell it.

These are the top 3 stalls which I feel serve the best Sauerkraut Dog in Singapore.
