Superfoods. I associate this term with health supplements, nutritious drinks, and exotic fruits. But at Eden's Kitchen in the Everton Park area, superfoods mean more than just health food, they retail organic food which is tasty yet nourishing, all souced sustainably. We attended a preview session of some of the products that Eden's Kitchen has to offer, and walked away with a better understanding of health!

Their Beeline 100% Pure Organic Green Tea is sourced from the Mie Prefecture of the Kansai region of Japan. Cultivated on the mountain slopes of the region, which features a natural run-off irrigation system, the green tea leaves are processed via micro grinding, which results in an organic, fine powder. Said to aid the body's immune system, this green tea retains a strong, full flavour.

Sampled the home made Chia Seeds Pudding with Cocos Coconut Oil, a family recipe of the owner. Their Cocos Coconut Oil is extracted from freshly harvested coconuts, using a patented cold extraction technology, which results in a pure, transparent liquid oil. In stark contrast to the cloudy, milky coconut oil typically found in supermarkets, this pure, clear coconut oil is a much better aid for metabolism and weight loss. This Cocos Coconut Oil can also be used for oil pulling, a technique of swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth, to improve oral health!

Partner Mr. Daniel Lai, the brother of health advocate and founder of Mums In Sync, Ms. Kareen Lai, shared about their brand, Nuts About Butter. The brother and sister duo, who design fitness and nutrition programmes to help new mothers, orginally started churning fresh almond butter for their clients as a health snack.

Daniel Lai

Nuts About Butter feature 3 varieties of Almond Butter; namely, Almond Butter Original, Almond Butter With Macadamia, and Almond Butter With Sesame. Each batch of almond butter is freshly churned, the basic recipe contains clean baked almonds (not roasted with oil), raw honey, and a tinge of sea salt, free from any other preservatives. Incredibly fragrant, wholesome, and tasty, so good that it's possible to eat it on its own!

While travelling the Philippines with some friends, Terry Tong chanced upon 2 superfoods unique to the region. The first was pili nuts, from the evergreen pili trees which grow in low-medium altitudes on volcanic soil. Painstakingly harvested by hand, the time consuming and labour intensive process, together with the fact that it grows only in a specific region, means that limited quantities of pili nuts can be produced. The second superfood was an anti-bacterial, medicinal honey, known as Trigona honey sustainably harvested from stingless bees. A hive only produces a maximum of a half-litre of Trigona honey per year, making it highly prized.

The Pili Pushers - Wild Pili Nuts have an interesting shape, like a cross between an oval peanut and a long almond, with a slight green white colour, and a taste the resembles a cross between pumpkin seeds and pistachio. It contains the highest amount of magnesium of any nut in the world (92%), as well as contains all 8 essential amino acids, and up to 96% monounsaturated fats, which are cholesterol lowering and healthy for the heart. Available in Wild Pili Nuts Unsalted, Wild Pili Nuts Ginger & Turmeric And Cayenne Peppers, and Wild Pili Nuts Cinnamon & Raw Honey flavours. My personal favourite was the Unsalted flavour, where you can taste the natural flavour of the pili nuts. The Cinnamon & Raw Honey flavour is a favourite of kids, and the elderly, while the Ginger & Turmeric And Cayenne Peppers flavour is the most interesting on the palate.

The interesting Anaya Wild Trigona Honey is harvested from stingless bees in limited quantities. Due to the bees making their hive from plant resin (propolis), the honey takes on anti-bacterial, and anti-microbial properties. The honey is noticeably thinner in texture than other commercial honey, with a tinge of sour taste that cuts through the sweetness of the honey. They even offer a throat spray version that acts to relieve sore throats, bad breath, and ulcers!
