Founded in December 2020 by former Banyan Tree Hotel chef Wiki Chua, Khao Hom By Rung Mama is a casual restaurant that serves authentic Thai dishes, made using recipes handed down from her mother, the eponymous Rung Mama herself. With a name that means 'Fragrant Jasmine Rice', Khao Hom By Rung Mama aspires for diners to experience tasty simplicity in a homely setting; and judging from the long queues they attract, Khao Hom By Rung Mama is doing well.

Ambience at Khao Hom By Rung Mama is casual, warmly lit with modern furnishing. The place is relatively comfortable for lingering meals, except for the long queues during peak meal times, and the bustling atmosphere. Seats are comfortable, and tables well cleaned. Touches of Thai decor lend character.

Service at Khao Hom By Rung Mama works quickly. Staff demonstrate rudimentary product knowledge, and clean up thoroughly after diners leave. Orders are fulfilled quickly, however, the kitchen can miss orders on occasion due to the volume they receive. If you're waiting an inordinate amount of time (more than 20 minutes), gently remind staff about your order.

Food at Khao Hom By Rung Mama is Thai cuisine, made with recipes handed down from the founder's mother. Ingredients are fresh and well spiced, dishes are delicious and presented in a visually appealing manner. The menu offers a good range. Portions are sized for sharing and communal dining. Prices are reflective of other restaurants, budget about SGD $40 per person for a meal here.

The Khao Plao / White Rice (SGD $1) is certainly fragrant. They use jasmine white rice here, arriving warm and fluffy soft, with grainy sweet flavour. Pairs so well with dishes that have curry or gravy. Worth ordering!

Loved the well executed Moo Ping / Grilled Pork Skewers (SGD $12). These chunky and succulent grilled pork skewers have a tender juicy bite to texture, with lovely smoky meaty sweet salty savoury flavour. Served over a bed of lettuce. We observed several children at a neighbouring table tucking into these with gusto. Highly recommended!

The Gai Hor Bai Toey / Pandan Chicken (SGD $12) was probably the weakest dish we had here, not tasty and rather forgettable. The chunks of boneless chicken are wrapped in pandan / screwpine leaf, but are oily without any fragrance. Could be improved.

The Pla Muk Neung Manao / Steamed Squid In Lime Garlic Sauce (SGD $22) arrives bubbling in a steaming tray, full with a delicious piquant gravy that can double as a soup / broth. Marinated with lime juice, red chili, and parsley, the chunky bouncy rings of squid are fresh, picking up the sharp sour sweet spicy flavours of the gravy well. Highly recommended!

The Pla Kapong Neung Manao / Steamed Sea Bass Fish In Lime Garlic Sauce (SGD $32) had a whole sea bass fish which wasn't very fresh, masked with loads of garlic. While the fish meat was tender and flaky, with bones that were easily removed, it still carried a distinct fishy flavour. Fortunately, the sharp zesty tangy sour spice savoury salty sweet flavour of the garlic, lime juice, parsley, and red chili gravy, managed to alleviate it a little. Would be better if the fish was fresh. Could be improved.

We loved the Kaeng Khiao Wan Gai / Green Curry Chicken (SGD $12), especially the rich and thick green curry, which carries bold sweet savoury herbal earthy spice flavour, pairing so well with rice. Within the curry, are chunks of tender boneless chicken and juicy pea eggplant / turkey berry, both of which pick up the flavours of the curry nicely. Rather addictive, and I like that it's well cooked without astringent remnants of paste or powder. Highly recommended!

The Trio Dessert Platter (SGD $10) features a sampling platter collection of 3 iconic Thai desserts. The Khao Niao Mamuang / Mango Sticky Rice has a base of chewy sticky jasmine glutinous rice coated in rich coconut milk, overlaid with slices of fresh juicy mango. Get everything in 1 bite, and you're rewarded with a burst of fruity milky grainy sweet sour flavours from the mango sticky rice. My personal favourite amongst the trio.

The Itim Kati / Coconut Milk Ice Cream is straightforward, with the coconut milk ice cream being smooth and creamy rich, with fruity earthy sweet milky flavour. The Tub Tim Grob / Red Rubies has a chilled thin milky sweet earthy floral broth of ice, sugar syrup, coconut milk, and pandan / screwpine leaf infusion, nicely refreshing.
