Description:
Prata is a Singaporean Indian bread / pancake, originally from Chennai, South India, where it is called Roti / Prata. Prata is made from a dough that has wheat flour / plain white flour, salt, water, egg, milk, sugar and clarified butter (Ghee). The dough is then rested.

Before cooking the Prata, the dough is flipped (like a pizza), and then stuffed / topped with 1 main ingredient, although it can also be eaten plain (Plain Prata).

Common ingredients used include cheese (Cheese Prata), egg (Egg Prata), onions (Onion Prata) or a combination (Egg & Onion Prata, Cheese Egg Onion Prata).

A sweet / dessert Prata typically has 1 ingredient, like chocolate syrup (Chocolate Prata), strawberry syrup (Strawberry Prata), blueberry syrup (Blueberry Prata), sliced pineapples (Pineapple Prata), pandan coconut egg jam / kaya (Kaya Prata), sliced banana (Banana Prata), honey syrup (Honey Prata) or sweetened condensed milk (Milk Prata).

A savoury Prata typically has 1 ingredient, like mushrooms (Mushroom Prata), chicken floss (Floss Prata / Chicken Floss Prata) or chicken sausage / hot dog (Sausage Prata).

The Prata is then folded into a square shape, and fried on a hot skillet with oil / clarified butter (Ghee).

A good Prata should have a crisp exterior, while being soft and fluffy inside. If an ingredient is included, it should be liberally stuffed / topped, and evenly cooked.

Prata is often served with a side dish of wet curry gravy, or sugar. While Prata is most often eaten for breakfast, its versatility to be stuffed / topped with a wide range of ingredients means Prata can also be eaten at any time throughout the day.
