Description:
Nasi Lemak is a dish of Malay origin, named for its rich, savoury and aromatic rice. Nasi Lemak is often served along with several side dishes.
The rice for Nasi Lemak is often prepared with white rice, although long grain rice such as jasmine rice or basmati rice are preferred for their fragrance. The rice is then soaked in coconut cream / coconut milk, and steamed. Sometimes, hawkers may add screwpine leaves (Pandan) while steaming for its additional fragrance.
Traditionally, the side dishes served with Nasi Lemak include fried anchovy fish (Ikan Bilis), peanuts, a fried egg / egg omelette / hard boiled eggs, sliced cucumbers and chili paste (Sambal). It is then served wrapped in a banana leaf.
Today, other popular side dishes served with Nasi Lemak include fried chicken wings, fried yellow / gold banded scad fish (Ikan Kuning), chicken sausage (Hot Dog), fish patty, fish cake, beef rendang, mutton rendang, sotong squid balls, fish balls, pickled vegetables (Acar), coconut vegetable curry (Sayur Lodeh), otah, or fried potato patty (Begedil).
Nasi Lemak is most often eaten for breakfast in Singapore, although it can also be eaten during any other meal.
