Description:
Idly is a type of Indian steamed cake, from Tamil Nadu or Karnataka, South India.


Idly is made with black gram bean flour (Vigna Mungo / Urad), plain white rice, salt, baking soda and oil. The fermented batter is shaped into cakes, and steamed.

The pan used to steam Idly is called an Idly pan, which gives the unique round, oval shape of the Idly.

Idly is often served in pairs, for breakfast, or as a snack. Idly is often accompanied by chutneys, pickles or yoghurt.
