Description:
Uttappam is a type of South Indian bread, from Tamil Nadu, which resembles a pancake or pizza.

Uttappam is made with black gram bean flour (Vigna Mungo / Urad) and boiled rice, normally a long grain rice like Basmati.

The combination results in a batter, which is cooked on a griddle or cooking pan. This results in Uttappam having a crisp exterior, with a fluffy and soft interior.

While Uttappam can be eaten plain, stalls often offer a choice of other ingredients to include, much like a pizza. These ingredients can be stuffed within the Uttappam, or as a topping on the exterior.

Uttappam ingredients can include tomatoes, onions, garlic, capsicum / bell peppers, chili, coconut, cabbage, egg, mushrooms, potatoes and more.

Uttappam is often served with various types of chutney, and can be eaten on its own, or with a curry.
